The Carnivores

Meet the meat-eaters! On this special tour, we’ll meet our raptor birds and our mammal carnivores,
and explore their adaptations for hunting and eating their prey. Find out why and how owls hunt at night
and what they eat. The carnivore tour takes approximately 50 minutes. Call the Zoo Society at 975-3395
or e-mail us at zoosociety@sasktel.net

Habitat and Adaptations Program

This program looks at how animals adapt to their surroundings.
Using their special adaptations wildlife can survive in a variety of habitats.
($2.00 per student with a minimum charge of $50.00 per group)

Hoofed Stock

What’s the difference between horns and antlers?
How many species of deer live in Saskatchewan?
We’ll use the concept of niche to understand how so many plant eaters can survive in one area,
and, we’ll explore what happens when animal habitats are altered.
Call the Zoo Society at 975-3395 or e-mail us at zoosociety@sasktel.net
($2.00/student-minimum $50.00 per group.  $100 per group on weekends)

Species at Risk

What do lions from Africa share with Saskatchewan’s Swift Fox?
We’ll discuss the importance of a healthy environment and human health as we discover why Saskatchewan
has so many species at risk, and what we can do to help. The presentation looks at the changes in the
Saskatchewan landscape and how human interaction has affected our wildlife.
The species at risk indoor program takes approximately 50 minutes. Add one hour for the outdoor program.
Please note this program is suitable for grade 4 and up.  Younger audiences may find some material upsetting.
Call the Zoo Society for other options and further details at 975-3395 or e-mail us at zoosociety@sasktel.net

Meet the Creature

This year-round program takes place in the Affinity Learning Centre at the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.
In creatures with fur, feathers, scales and slime – how do scientists classify vertebrate animals?
Find out in this hands-on exploration of animal life.
Groups larger than 15 students will be split into two groups.
This program can be combined with a carnivore tour/presentation or pond dipping (seasonal activity)
to accommodate classes that need to split into smaller groups.
We recommended that you allow two hours for this program.
Call the Zoo Society at 975-3395 or e-mail us at zoosociety@sasktel.net
($2.00/student-minimum $50.00 per group.  $100/group on weekends)

Owls and Owl Pellets

With the help of Spirt (Spirit), our Great Horned Owl, we look at the ecology of owls and other raptors in
Saskatchewan. Unlike other birds of prey, owls cannot digest their prey’s bones. What is left behind is known
as an owl pellet. These pellets are used by scientists to study the biodiversity of the owl’s habitat.
Want to know how scientists do this? We’ll dissect some owl pellets to discover what is inside.
This program takes approximately 90 minutes.
Please note that this program is run at a cost of $3.00 per student.
Call the Zoo Society at 975-3395 or e-mail us at zoosociety@sasktel.net
($3.00/student - minimum $75.00 per group.  $150.00/group on weekends)

Pond Dipping

We’ll explore our prairie marsh to see what invertebrates call Saskatchewan home.
Classes larger than 15 students will be split into groups.
This program can be combined with either a carnivore and bird of prey tour or an indoor
“meet the creature” program to accommodate split groups.
This program takes approximately 120 minutes.

in their various ecosystems. Can a snake “smell” with its tongue? Are snakes slimy?
Meet our Common Garter Snake from Saskatchewan or our Royal Python from Africa or
Central Bearded Dragon – a lizard from Australia – to find out.

Math and Health at the Zoo - Day Program

(9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.)
Your class needs to help the zoo keepers feed the animals
First, we need to learn about nutrition, then we need to calculate how much to feed the animals - based on
some rather unique nutrition labels. It's a fun and memorable way to learn about math and nutrition.
Call the Zoo Society at 975-3395 for for more information and prices.

History at the Zoo - Day Program

(9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)
The Saskatoon Forestry Farm is a National Historic Site. What a great place to learn about Saskatchewan agriculture
and the role of shelterbelts grown here at the Sutherland Dominion Nursery Station. The settlement of Saskatchewan
affected the animals as well. In this day program we will look at the human impacts on the land and wildlife.
Call the Saskatoon Zoo Society at 975-3395 for more information and prices.

Biodiversity at the Zoo - Day Program

(9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)
We all talk about Biodiversity, but what is Biodiversity? And how do scientists measure it?
In this day program we study a variety of ways of looking at Biodiversity that combine real-life science with fun activities.
Call the Saskatoon Zoo Society at 975-3395 for more information and prices.

Art at the Zoo - Day program

(9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
It's a full day at the zoo. After studying the ethics of keeping animals in cages and learning about an animal's needs and requirements, the students will work collaboratively to design a 3D model of a zoo enclosure with its associated plants and animals.
Call the Saskatoon Zoo Society for more information and prices.
